When choosing a facial cleanser, it is easy to be drawn to descriptions such as fluffy, dense or fine-textured foam.

But when you actually try a product, you might find that…

“I expected my skin to feel more moisturised, but it feels tight after washing.”

“I wanted a fresh, clean feel, but a slippery residue remains.”

Have you ever found that you love the feel of a foam, but the after-wash feel is not quite right for your skin?

Foam texture and how your skin feels after washing are two different things, and it is worth considering them separately.

To explore this, I tried 15 foaming facial cleansers and compared them across two dimensions:

Foam texture (fluffy, soft, balanced, cushiony and dense) and Immediate after-wash feel (fresh, slightly fresh, balanced, slightly moisturised and moisturised).

Use the map to find products that come closer to your own preferences.

The key takeaway | Foam texture alone does not determine the after-wash feel

When I compared these 15 products across both dimensions, I found that products with similar foam textures did not necessarily leave the skin feeling the same way.

For example, some cushiony foams left a fresh-feeling finish, while others left the skin feeling slightly moisturised.

Looking at foam texture and after-wash feel separately can therefore help you narrow down the options to products that better match your preferences.

Product Table

What affects the after-wash feel?

What makes the after-wash feel different from one foaming cleanser to another?

The way your skin feels after cleansing depends on the formulation as a whole, including the types and concentrations of cleansing ingredients, pH and moisturising ingredients.

Even when cleansers use the same general types of cleansing ingredients, differences in their concentrations and combinations can lead to different sensory experiences.

That is why it is worth looking beyond the ingredient list and checking how a cleanser actually feels when you use it.

How the products were evaluated

The map is based on a sensory evaluation conducted by the author, en expert with many years of experience in facial cleanser development and evaluation at a major cosmetics manufacturer.

*Please note that sensory perceptions vary between individuals and may differ depending on skin type and conditions of use.

Foam texture

Each product was used on the hands and face. The appearance of the foam, ease of spreading, resilience, body and ability to hold its shape were evaluated.

Based on a consistent set of assessment criteria, the products were classified into five categories: fluffy, soft, balanced, cushiony and dense.

After-wash feel (immediately after cleansing)

Before cleansing, the skin was allowed to acclimatise for at least 15 minutes in a room maintained at 22 ± 3°C and 55 ± 5% relative humidity. The face was then washed according to the manufacturer's recommended method.

Immediately after the skin was patted dry with a towel, its feel was assessed by touch and classified into five categories: fresh, slightly fresh, balanced, slightly moisturised and moisturised.

Changes in skin feel over time, as described in the individual product reviews, were assessed separately from the immediate after-wash evaluation.

*In this article, “after-wash feel” refers to the tactile sensation of the skin after cleansing. Skin hydration levels were not measured.

Estimated number of uses per bottle

The amount dispensed per pump was measured for each product. The estimated number of uses per bottle was then calculated based on the measured dispensing amount, the manufacturer's recommended amount per use and the product's total capacity.

Across the 15 products, the average amount dispensed per pump was 0.97 g, with 13 products falling within the range of 0.94–1.07 g.

However, the estimated number of uses varied by as much as approximately twofold, even among products with the same capacity.

When estimating how long a product may last and its cost per use, the manufacturer's recommended amount per use is therefore worth considering alongside the product's total capacity.

In summary | Narrow down your options based on your preferences

The key finding from comparing these 15 products was that foam texture and after-wash feel do not necessarily go hand in hand.

Even products with similar foam textures left the skin feeling different after washing.

Rather than relying on a “best cleanser” ranking, try finding a cleanser that matches your own preferences.

・Decide which combination of foam texture and after-wash feel you prefer.

・Use the map to narrow your options down to two or three products.

・Read the individual reviews to explore changes in after-wash feel over time and learn more about each product's ingredients and formulation.

Not simply because a product is popular, but because it comes closer to what you prefer.

With that in mind, you may find a cleanser that makes your daily cleansing routine feel a little more comfortable.
